Know All About NID Design Aptitude Tests (DAT) Prelims & Mains
The gateway to NID’s prestigious B.Des. program involves successfully clearing two distinct stages:

Stage 1: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims
This is the initial screening test, conducted physically as a paper-and-pencil/pen exam simultaneously across all designated test centers.
Expect a diverse mix of questions combining text and visual elements, designed to assess your core design aptitude – observation, creativity, logic, and visual thinking.
The exact test duration will be specified on your admit card, so keep an eye out for that crucial detail.

Important: The question paper is presented exclusively in English.
Performance in DAT Prelims determines your progression. NID prepares separate category-wise merit lists (General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD) based on the category applied for during registration. A separate list is also prepared for Overseas candidates.
Shortlisting: Only candidates who rank high enough in their respective category merit lists will be shortlisted and become eligible to appear for the DAT Mains exam.
Flexibility Clause: NID reserves the right to modify the exam schedule, format (online/offline/hybrid), or structure if unforeseen circumstances arise. Always check official communications closer to the exam date.

Stage 2: Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Mains
Entry to DAT Mains is strictly merit-based, relying solely on your DAT Prelims score. Only shortlisted candidates receive the golden ticket.

NID Admit Cards: Download your DAT Mains admit card only from the official NID admissions website (https://admissions.nid.edu). Don’t rely on other sources!
DAT Mains is a more hands-on, experiential evaluation. It typically involves studio-based activities and tests conducted in a controlled environment. Think beyond written answers – be prepared for practical tasks, model making, discussions, or in-depth portfolio reviews (as applicable).

Language: Like Prelims, the instructions and question paper for Mains will be in English only.
Test Centres: The specific locations for DAT Mains are announced by NID later in the admission cycle.
Logistics: Candidates are responsible for arranging and funding their own travel and accommodation for the DAT Mains. NID does not provide this.
Flexibility Clause: Similar to Prelims, NID retains the discretion to change the Mains schedule, format (online/offline/hybrid), or nature of the tests if necessary due to unexpected events. Stay updated via official channels.
